Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception Review

Uncharted 3 sets a new benchmark for all-action blockbuster games, this is something truly special.

Uncharted 3 is a masterpiece. I could start and finish the review there, because it really is. From the moment the opening montage kicks in, to the final credits, it has every single ingredient needed to succeed.

The original Drake's Fortune set the bar for visuals and third-person adventures on the PlayStation 3 and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves greatly improved on that, adding multiplayer modes and even shockingly improving on visuals; as does Drake's Deception. It looks brilliant, and if you have a 3D TV, I urge you to try it out; don the silly specs and get very immersed.

"Y'know what, I have no idea where I parked the Volvo"

Drake's Deception may sound familiar to it's predecessors, with the same general idea of a lost city that needs finding before the bad guys get there. But where it achieves one of it's greatest feats is through it's unpredictability. With the game starting off with a barroom brawl that introduces its new melee system, leading to a conversation between villainess Katherine Marlowe and Drake, the game leaves behind the betrayal elements of the last game, instead focusing on a more, "family" orientated relationship between Drake and his mentor Sully.

Gameplay still revolves around climbing walls and shooting bad guys, but thanks to minor refinement, those mechanics are now better than ever. Everything looks incredible, and running through levels and taking cover never gets old because Naughty Dog has done a lot of work to merge the gameplay with the story. With perfect pacing alongside cutting edge graphics and excellent cinematography -- it's a breathtaking experience.

"You said you'd put out your cigar!"

The game isn't all climbing and shooting though, and strangely, one of the games best sections contains none of those segments.

*SPOILER ALERT*

In a heart-wrenching section where Drake is by himself and completely lost. He's fell from a plane, using only a parachuted cargo crate to land safely, he finds himself lost in a desert. Literally on his own, battered and bruised, he's as good as dead. He becomes desperate. And although the sands and textures look phenomenal, it's horrible. After mirages of water, and some of his lost friend, Sully, appear, he seeks shelter and loses hope. And as he does, my heart breaks.

It's a very slow process, with day/night sequences, but it never gets old or boring because it's so well done, and shows us a side of Drake we've never seen before. Drake slowly begins to give up, until he finds a a derelict city, with a small puddle of water, he give sin to his despair and drinks it, after which, finds himself at odds with armed bad guys, and the pace picks up again.

It's a brilliant addition to the gameplay, and it was an enjoyable, and moving part of the story, even though it made me want to reach out and hug Drake, just to tell him he wasn't alone, but that's a different story...

What Naughty Dog has done with Drake's Deception, is created a living world. We all know the cast, the relationships between Drake, Sully, Elena, Chloe and the witty banter each has, as well as the one liners Drake spews out through the game, but what's changed here, is that we're given backstories, broken bonds and characters fears. It's beautiful and engaging, and at times, glorious nightmares.

Sully, like your Dad, only much cooler.

Speaking of the cast, yet again, the acting is tremendous, the actors record their lines along with their movements, which leads to their characters feeling incredibly real, they all bring glittering chemistry. The games score adds more atmospheric feeling, beautifully orchestrated, and memorable. The games own "best in the industry" graphics go up and over what we all thought was possible, making the whole thing gorgeous, with sand clinging to Drakes hair, fire that almost burns through your TV screen and sunlight that breaks through holes in ceilings and walls.

But what about when it's all over? Then there's the multiplayer. Not really anything new over the Beta that we were all playing over the summer, but it stands on it's own, with several game modes, and the fact it's always a fresh experience each time you play, the multiplayer will be host to many a frustrating and enjoyable time.

Overall

Drake's Deception is a truly unique and incredibly special game, but that's the problem; it's not just a game, it's an experience.

From start to finish, single player to multiplayer, Uncharted 3 is one of games finest moments, and you better experience it, otherwise you'll miss out on one of the best games ever made.

A true masterpiece.

Uncharted 3 Multiplayer Beta: Now Non-Playstation Plus Members Can Get In On The Action

If you wasn't a Playstation Plus member or owned InFamous 2, or for whatever reason you decided not to take the 30 Day trial from the Welcome Back pack, you were missing out on the Uncharted 3 Multiplayer Beta.

Bad times, eh?

Well, fear not, for now you can download the Beta and join in the fun! Head over to the Playstation Store and grab it now!

Uncharted 3 Multiplayer Beta: Verdict So Far

If like myself, you're one of the millions that has been eagerly anticipating the release of the Uncharted 3 Multiplayer Beta; the first chance to sample Uncharted 3 with your own bare hands.

Well, yesterday saw the big launch, so it begs the question— is it any good?

In a nutshell...HELL YEAH!!!!

There are nine modes. Team Deathmatch, 3-Team Deathmatch (three teams of two face off), Team Objective (complete the assigned goals), Free For All (kill everyone), Plunder (capture the treasure), High Stakes (gamble with your XP and cash), and three co-op modes.

Player wise, the modes offer reasonable groups of players- Team Deathmatch, Team Objective and Plunder are 5v5. Three-Team Deathmatch is 2v2v2. Free for All and High Stakes are 8 players, whilst the Co-op modes vary.

What are the maps like?
You get two choices; an airfield one and a French chateau. Both pack plenty of climbing and off real time dynamic events to keep the matches lively, like attacking planes and collapsing structures. All in all, quite nice and entertaining.

Power Plays feature in the demo, granting you a total of 9. Power Plays are 1 minute events that occur to the losing team, just to help you out.

Marked Man - A person on the winning team is marked, and the losing team gets 3 points if they kill him. Meanwhile, the winning team gets double cash for each kill and a special medal if the Marked Man doesn't die.

Cursed - The winning team sees all characters as skeletons and friendly fire is turned on. Each time the losing team gets a kill or the winning team kills one of its own, the losing team gets two points. Meanwhile, the winning team gets double cash for each member of the losing team killed.

Exposed - The winning team's location is revealed to the losing team. The winning team gets double cash for each losing team member killed.

Double Damage - Losing team inflicts double damage. Winning team earns double cash for each kill.

The Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta features eight boosters (equipable abilities that affect gameplay) spread over two slots;

Booster Slot 1 Options
Come Here - See the opponent that killed you on your radar until he or she dies.

Retaliation - Spawn with the Power Weapon you were killed by.

Cloaked - Opponents won't see you on the radar and you can't be heard.

Weapon Expert - Gives you the ability to add additional mods to you weapons.

Booster Slot 2 Options
Back in the Saddle - Reduces your respawn time.

Bargain - Decreases the cost of Medal Kickbacks. (Special powers you set before the game and have to earn in a match.)

Power Hunter - See the location of Power Weapons.

Daredevil - When you taunt over a defeated opponent, you get extra ammo.

Co-op Booster Slot 1
Scoped In – Co-op Reduced pain wobble while scoped in

Regeneration – Co-op Recover from wounds faster

Beast Mode – Co-op Move faster with heavy objects

Co-op Booster Slot 2
Monkey Man – co-op Increase traversal speed

Bargain – Co-op Decrease Medal Kickback cost

Back in the Saddle – Co-op Respawn time reduced by a specified time

Co-op Medal Kickbacks
Militia Man – Co-op No reloading

Team Medic -- Heal yourself and teammates

Speedy G – Co-op Speed Boost

Mega Bomb – Co-op One massive grenade explosion Army of Three Doubles the damage of all players within a specified distance

Gameplay wise, it doesn't feel much different from Uncharted 2, which is no bad thing, as I felt instantly comfortable. Obviously as this is the first Beta, there are a few bugs, but they're perfectly playable.
A few people have cited that the Beta is prone to freezing; which I did encounter. But I realised that just leaving the PS3 (not turning it off), it soon sorts itself out, and I was back into matchmaking in a few minutes.

What worried me the most about the beta, was that ALOT of people are crazy levels ahead. I was doing pretty well (as my "thrust" taunt after every kill will tell), yet I'm only just nearing level 4. But they're are quite a few level 15+ players, and although we here Europe didn't get the beta till around 9:30pm, those crazy Americans must have booked time off school/work to get some serious Uncharted 3 game time in (which if you did, Tech Beever salutes you).

So far I've only been playing for the best part of a day, but over the weekend I'll be getting deeply pulled into the awesome Uncharted 3, all in preparation for that impending November release...

Not got the Uncharted 3 Multiplayer Beta yet? Here's your schedule soldier;

Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception Villain Revealed

We would have actually posted this earlier, but we've been too busy watching it, then running round with excitment, then repeating the process, before calming down. We love Uncharted THAT much. So, without further ado, here is the revealed villain of Drakes Deception; Katherine Marlowe, a British woman, who, according to developer Naughty Dog, is currently the head of a 400-year-old cabal, who is associated with our dear Queen Elizabeth and her good explorer friend, Sir Francis Drake; Nathan's long-deceased reletive.

Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception- 2 Minute gameplay video (minus Jimmy Falon)

If you saw the Premier of the Uncharted 3 Gameplay Video, you'll remember it was shown on the Jimmy Fallon show. You'll also remember that Jimmy Fallon is not funny. He cannot play games, and he ruined the premier by talking! The video itself is just a demo, the game isn't finished yet, so imagine how good it's going to look!

*note- Beever has a rant for you, Fallon...

Anyway, here is the 2 minute video, without Jimmy Fallon- enjoy!
