Uncharted Movie: Top Tips To Not Ruin Drake's Name (As Much)

Written By Tech-Beever on Friday, 8 July 2011 | 11:20

It seems our U.S.L boycotting of the Uncharted movie won the first round, but now it's time for part 2.
David O. Russell has lost the role of director, whilst its unclear if Mark Wahlberg will be playing the role of Nathan Drake.

It appears now, however, that Neil Burger (Limitless) has been brought on board to both direct and rewrite the film.

As it's probably going to happen, we've compiled what we think could help make the movie be reasonably good. Maybe.

Don't cast Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake:

Quite why Wahlberg got cast in the first place is beyond us, but hopefully with Russell out of the picture, so is Wahlberg. So, who should be cast as Nathan Drake? We've put together who we think could make Drakes jump from cinematic game, to, erm, cinema.

Gerrard Buttler
Ok, so he doesn't always look as spitting image of Nathan as he does in this picture, but he'd be a much better pick than Wahlberg. Buttler is no stranger to action films, but as this hopefully won't be a mindless action romp, he needs to bring that extra bit of Drake to the table.

Shia Labeouf
He might not be everyone's first choice (if anyone's), but I think he could pull the role of Nathan Drake off pretty well. He's got the action prowess from Transformers, as well as the natural witty humour he brings to his roles.

Joe Flanigan
More notably known for his portrayal of Lt. Colonel John Sheppard in Stargate Atlantis, Joe Flanigan is a pretty good choice for Drake. In Stargate Atlantis, his character acts very similar to Drake, and he's not that dissimilar in the looks department either, and the fact he sounds a little like him is a bonus.

Keep It Simple and Give It Meaning:

Prince of Persia (kind of) showed that games-to-movies don't always have to be awful. Don't get me wrong, PoP was by no means brilliant, but it was far better than the toss we've endured in the past (Doom, Hitman, Resident Evil, Max Payne).

But what script could make Uncharted fare better? The best alternative to Uncharted, is Indiana Jones, so it'd be wise to take it's cues from Indy.

Example; Nathan is on the search for some mystery artefact, an artefact that some villain and his band of merry men are also seeking. If said villain gets his/her hands on it, the world is doomed, so Nathan MUST retrieve it first, by all means necessary.
It's simple, and it would work. Throw in gripping sequences, humour, sexual tension and romance and there's no reason it should go wrong.

But for the love of all that is holy, DO NOT use elements of the game (Dooms famous First Person segment is the worst culprit for this).

As long as Burger doesn't over complicate things, there's no reason it should go wrong.

Don't Make Nathan Drake Invincible:

He's not invincible in the games, so he shouldn't be some bullet proof hero in the film. He's just a guy who can take care of himself, getting out if tricky situations without being killed.

Nobody Makes Me Bleed My Own Blood
On the subject of bullets; no bullet time sequences. They died years ago, and no film can really pull it off, and it especially wouldn't work with Uncharted.

Don't Make It Live Action:

The most obvious step (other than not making it), would be to just let developer Naughty Dog create a two hour cgi film. Let's face it, that'd be the most logical step for it to take.

The Resident Evil film series are appalling, but the cgi movie Resident Evil: Degeneration wasn't 'that' bad, but compared to the live action films, it was a masterpiece. Naughty Dog already have the ability to make the Uncharted games incredibly cinematic, so just let 'em at it.

What do you guys think? Are you for or against the Uncharted movie? If you're for it, what are your suggestions? Let us know!
