Comic Book Review: Age of Apocalypse #3

When I looked at AoA #1, it sunk in I hadn't read a good X-Men series since Schism. Luckily then, that David Laphram and Roberto De La Torre have done a brilliant job with this alternate universe. However, now 3-issues in, how is AoA holding up?

Age of Apocalypse is a dark series. Like, brutal. You'd think after all the violence from #1 and #2, that there would be some form of silver lining. Alas, things are actually looking worse for the heroes. The future looks bleak, Sugar Man successfully revives Alex Summers and others to do Omegas’ bidding and Prophet finds the where-abouts of the secret lab where they are making these resurrections *SPOILER ALERT* where it's revealed that Harper Simmons, our narrator, just so happens to be Dr. Bruce Banner.

At times, it seems like Lapham is writing himself into a corner. How can the heroes really hope to overcome the odds? It just doesn't seem like there is a way for them to win. But that's the beauty of the AoA; this thing doesn't have to have a happy ending.

Roberto De La Torre shows he's a true pro with his ink, allowing the brutality of the world infect every panel. Plus, for a book that is rated 12+, things sure do get bloody. Throat slitting, bullets through brains, Del La Torre draws all it in a glorious, bloody fashion.

If you're not caught up with the Age of Apocalypse, I suggest you grab yourself the first three issues:

Cal and Dan's Geek Off Discussion- X-Men First Class

The title says it all really, here Cal and Dan discuss about something over MSN. Today, it's X-Men: First Class, so read on (if you want to, no pressure...)

X-Men First Class

Dan:
just checked out the first class trailer

Cal:
oh yeah?

Dan:
i thought it was a an film at first
but fuck me
that could be the first decent one in a while

Cal:
I'm not impressed

Dan:
seriously
James macavoy
the guy from inglorious?
i think it could really work

Cal:
I'm not buying it, i mean, why is Angel Salvadore appearing in front of Xavier and Magneto while they are lying on a bed? bit risque. and don't like "before he was magneto" etc
but it could work, like the shots of beast in the cockpit, and mystique's porcupine morphing effect. plus, i didn't actually miss seeing Wolverine, which is a shocker haha
but I'm still undecided
fingers crossed though
so yeeeeeeeeeeeeah
we shall see

Dan:
i thought i saw havock in there too

Cal:
there's quite a few
nightcrawlers dad

Dan:
Emma frost

Cal:
i just hope it's better than 'Last Stand'

Dan:
i know

Cal:
origins weren't horrid
not what i wanted, but better than Last Stand

Dan:
it shouldn't have been focused on wolverine

Cal:
what? Origins?
think you'll find it was...haha

Dan:
yeah
shouldn't have

Cal:
how should Wolverine Origins not have been focused on Wolverine?
it's his Origin

Dan:
no no
i mean an "origins" film

not about him though

Cal:
i disagree there, i just think they should have handled the story better, and used the Origin written by Bill Jemas, Joe Quesada and Paul Jenkins

Dan:
wolverine was never the centre character for me though

Cal:
ha, then you were never going to enjoy Origins then!

Dan:
true
i wanted to give it a shot
simply for gambit i think
and deadpool

Cal:
Deadpool wasn't in it though, not really, it was Weapon XI

Dan:
i know
but still
i wanted him more

Cal:
there's apparently a Deadpool spin off

Dan:
 there had better be

Cal:
there was meant to be a Magneto Origins too, but I'm assuming First Class has prevented that

Dan:
i would have been up for that

Cal
i think the magneto one would have been really interesting

Dan:
 same
i think it would was you who told me about the magneto one
and i loved the idea of that

Cal:
yeah, that was ages ago, like before origins came out

Do you agree with either Cal and Dan? Let us know by commenting!

X-Men: First Class Trailer

The official trailer for the fourth X-Men movie (not including Origins), First Class, has been released. The movie is set way back when Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr (Professor X and Magneto) were younger, and, to be honest, I'm not impressed thus far.
